Arizona Utility Commissioner Responds To L.A. Mayor's Boycott Threats

AZ utility board member responds to LA boycott over SB1070
posted at 2:55 pm on May 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott the state of Arizona over its new immigration-enforcement law, and now the Arizona Corporation Commission has responded. Gary Pierce, one of the commissioners chosen in state-wide elections to the utility regulation panel, notes that Los Angeles gets about 25% of its power from Arizona producers. If the City of Angels really wants a boycott, Pierce offers his services to help, as he explains in a letter to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and copied to Hot Air:

(also via: gatewaypundit)

Dear Mayor Villaraigosa,

I was dismayed to learn that the Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based companies — a vote you strongly supported — to show opposition to SB 1070 (Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act).

You explained your support of the boycott as follows: “While we recognize that as neighbors, we share resources and ties with the State of Arizona that may be difficult to sever, our goal is not to hurt the local economy of Los Angeles, but to impact the economy of Arizona. Our intent is to use our dollars — or the withholding of our dollars — to send a message.” (emphasis added)

I received your message; please receive mine. As a state-wide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona’s electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the “resources and ties” we share with the City of Los Angeles. In fact, approximately twenty-five percent of the electricity consumed in Los Angeles is generated by power plants in Arizona.

If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.

People of goodwill can disagree over the merits of SB 1070. A state-wide economic boycott of Arizona is not a message sent in goodwill.

Sincerely,

Commissioner Gary Pierce

The BOLD in the Commish's letter is mine...

A pdf file of the letter can be downloaded here from the Commissioner website.

Obviously LA won't seek other forms of electrons any more than it will stop draining Northern California's water supplies....
Villaraigosa, L.A.'s Mayor, was chairman of the UCLA MECHA Chapter "Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada". (Everything for the Race - Nothing outside the Race).
So perhaps this racist Villaraigosa will put his revolutionary social justice convictions on the line and send buses for the 400,000 plus illegals that are costing Arizona 3 billion a year and take care of them? Ya think?

People need to wake up and look at who and what they have put into offices of control and what is happening to the cities and the states in which these destroyers rule.

Sanctions? Boycotts?

Arizona has serious security problems that they are trying to deal with. They can't rely on the Obama people to deal with it so they have to act on their own to protect their citizens.

All Arizona has done is to duplicate a federal law enabling them to do what the responsible Federal government won't do.

This War on America attitude from the Obama left continues to divide our country.

Mr. Obama, it is not a joke, do your job and secure our borders and stop encouraging people like the "Villaraigosa's" to threaten the economy and peace of a sister state.

Arizona is threatening the lives of millions because they don't agree with Los Angles views!
Turning off L.A power as a weapon to force California to except there view is a threat to our our country!
The owner of this Power company should be brought up on charges!! Not just liberals will be hurt be such a stupid act.
Arizona law has the potential to discriminate against people of color and is not right. You supporters are all racists!!!

I hardly know how to answer this. I have to shake my head 3 times. HUH?

The owner of this Power company? '...brought up on charges'? I truly hope your Sargent isn't letting you walk around with a loaded weapon.

This was a letter from one of the Arizona Utility commissioners -->not an OWNER.

Then you ignore that it is L.A. (San Francisco -Oakland-Berkeley etc) threatening to force Arizona to their point of view but state emphatically it is wrong for Arizona to respond in kind.

Still shaking my head.

First of all, much like the Arizona law, you really need to re-READ the letter and READ the background for context.

In 13-1 vote L.A. councilmen voted to cancel all contracts, and doing any business, with Arizona.

Despite the tease-grabbing headlines, that people are writing about, this man's letter is NOT threatening to turn out LA's lights.

The letter is telling these knuckleheads that if they are true to their convictions then don't just pick and choose WHICH Arizona contracts you will cancel.

In other words- Feel free to 'renegotiate' with Arizona regarding LA power agreements.

'Renegotiate' is not boycotting.

His observation is If they really want to cancel all business contracts, which unfortunately includes one with Power to LA , then he, Pierce, will give it the ole college try to give them help in their wish of not doing any business with Arizona.

The letter specifically points out that, IF the Council follows thru (with canceling ALL contracts) and boycotts Arizona Power...and Boycotts Arizona Power...And Boycotts Arizona Power...it is LA who will be turning the lights out if they do so...so check your wisdom.

It is a very well put tongue in cheek response to the hypocritical irrational ones in L.A..

As to "potential" to discriminate...the 'potential has been there for 70 years in the FEDERAL LAW.
CALIFORNIA has a similar Immigration law as Arizona and Federal law.
PENAL CODE SECTION 833-851.90
-SEE 834b-
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000&file=833-851.90

Why isn't L.A. boycotting California?

Better yet why isn't California enforcing it's own law?

Sanctuary cities are breaking the Law.

Obam's dishonest descriptions of Arizona's law as a 'potential' problem obviously is not a law abiding opinion but a political one.

Obama and crew know very well that a person who goes out for ice-cream - unless they steal it or throw it in the counter persons face- will not be harassed or be approached by law enforcement.

They can't because it's in the law that they can not.

The threat to our country is actually the politicians who ignore law and use division to inflame.

There is potential that any law could be a bad one - you know like democrats forcing banks and lenders under law to make loans to people who 'potentially' couldn't pay them back and bankrupting every nook and cranny in our nation.

The Immigration law is specific. If a violation of law or right is violated there is remedy in the court.
